Prayer, Morning Song, by Avett
Brothers
Avett Brother interviews:
Scripture Reading: Genesis 1
24 God said, “Let the earth produce every
kind of living thing: livestock, crawling things, and wildlife.” And that’s
what happened. 25 God made every kind of wildlife, every kind of livestock, and
every kind of creature that crawls on the ground. God saw how good it was. 26
Then God said, “Let us make humanity in our image to resemble us so that they
may take charge of the fish of the sea, the birds in the sky, the livestock,
all the earth, and all the crawling things on earth.”
27 God created humanity in God’s own image,
in the divine image God created them,
male and female God created them.
28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be
fertile and multiply; fill the earth and master it. Take charge of the fish of
the sea, the birds in the sky, and everything crawling on the ground.” 29 Then
God said, “I now give to you all the plants on the earth that yield seeds and
all the trees whose fruit produces its seeds within it. These will be your
food. 30 To all wildlife, to all the birds in the sky, and to everything
crawling on the ground—to everything that breathes—I give all the green grasses
for food.” And that’s what happened. 31 God saw everything he had made: it was
supremely good.
There was evening and there was morning: the
sixth day.
Discussion questions:
Why should Christians care about
what popular music says?
Should engage in appreciating
music outside the church?
Talk about your image of God and
God’s work in the world
Theological reasons why we might engage media
No event from which God is absent
God has taken the initiative and
addressed humankind in many ways/mediums
God has not stopped moving,
working, speaking in the world around us
Where truth, wisdom, justice, are
proclaimed/exhibited, there is God.
God claimed all of creation good,
especially humanity, we are capable of reflecting that good in the created
world and through our creative work
Christian responsibility to
discern God working in the world, joining God in that world, revealing that
work to others
God sends us into the world to
worship God and serve humanity
Cries for help and songs of
praise are never for ourselves alone—for God (see the Psalms)
Worship is no retreat from the
world it is part of our mission
Media literacy
·
What is the
medium?
·
What is the
purpose this particular genre?
·
How does it
shape our knowledge?
·
Who helped
create this medium? (producers, artists, companies, etc)
·
What is it
saying – words? The music? The images? The feelings it evokes?
·
Who is
included? Who is excluded?
·
What are we
consuming?
Questions for Christians to ask:
1.
Does it
point me toward God (not just good feelings, but all aspects point to God)
2.
How does it
intersect with my experience, faith, religious tradition
3.
How does it
challenge, destabilize, discomfort, why?
4.
What do I
know, can I learn about who produced this (artists, companies, producers), what
is their story, life, faith, goals, hopes (Google them, read interviews, read
about who produces them and their mission)
Read lyrics and
watched Imagine Dragos, Demons
